Falling in Love Montage
Every other week, Valerie and Helen will look at a different chick flick (muff film, broad comedy, lady thriller, period movie, whathaveyou) and boil it down to its themes and how those themes affect our tender feminine emotions. Mostly we'll just go off on tangents about Sex and the City. We'll talk about chick flick tropes, like love triangles/squares/pentagons and sisterhood. We'll explore just how strong girl power actually is and if real vampires sparkle in the sunlight, or if that's just movie magic. And we'll reveal our (Helen's) repressed sexual feelings for Hugh Grant. We'll get a dude's opinion, and we'll even listen to it.

Happy Pride! As every good brand can tell you right now, we are living in difficult times. So difficult, in fact, that we talked for two hours -- just like in the old difficult times! This month's movie is admittedly pretty white, pretty straight, plenty corporate, hella cisgendered, and doesn't wear a mask (mostly), but this month's movie does happen to be Josie and the Pussycats -- the best movie ever; join the army. This episode is a lot, and it is lovingly dedicated to the memory of Adam Schlesinger (October 31, 1967 – April 1, 2020). Outtro music: Way Back into Love, written and performed by Adam Schlesinger Co-host Helen appears on episodes of Deep in Bear Country [Episode 247 - Play Ball!] & We'll Get it Right Next Year: An Adventure in Cinema [Mailbag Apocalypse w/ Helen] Check out Limited Cel, a generational Hanna-Barbera cartoon review show, with Mike and Nick Wood. Well, we kinda lucked into a quarantine McConauMay special event. We recorded one great episode on Magic Mike with our friend Jon Biegen of Stranger Still back in March. Then, when that episode was lost faster than Big-Dick Richie's tearaway pants, we recorded another, even greater episode on Magic Mike with our friend Jon Biegen of Stranger Still in April! And here we are in McConauMay 2020 with a new episode on a new (-to-the-podcast) McConaughey movie and a beloved past McConauMay guest. Everything worked out in the end, and Jon Biegen and Channing Tatum are national treasures. For different, but sometimes similar, reasons. Anyway, enjoy, and happy belated Mother's Day. The movie we're discussing has butts in it.

Nothing makes a woman feel more like a girl than a man who sings like a boy, and nothing makes a chick flick fan feel more like a real podcaster than a very special guest. We were delighted to have The Flop House Podcast's own Dan McCoy join us -- from a very safe distance -- to talk about the 2012 aca-hit Pitch Perfect. We find harmony with Anna Kendrick et al, but we also find plenty to criticize -- so listeners like you don't call the movie names behind its back. You can hear more from Dan at flophousepodcast.com, follow him at @dankmccoy on Twitter, or catch some of his Emmy-award-winning writing on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.

It's April the first! And here we are with a new episode, just for you! Just kidding! It's an old episode that was originally just for paying Patrons, but since the world and network fell apart, we're sharing it with you now! In this bonus episode, Helen and Valerie analyze a gender-swapped adaptation of the classic story of the Three Little Pigs. Special guests Maintenance Guy and Walter (the dog) also feature. Is this swine story a chick flick? You have to listen to find out! I would just tell you, but I haven't listened through the ep in a while and I don't remember. Stay tuned for a return to full episodes later in the month. And happy April, FiLM Fools!

If you're reading this, that means you've found our, err "August episode". Would you believe it, we said Pants so many times it took just forever to edit all of those Plosives. 🤷🏻♀️ But hey, it's September and we're with special af guest Lauren DeBlasi Jackson talking about a movie that rates so high on the chick flick checklist, it needs its own subgenre. In fact, join us in our facebook group to workshop this generic title. If you've never tried on the pants, you can stream both the first and second Traveling Pants movies on US Netflix*. *as of the time of this release, which is definitely in August 😅

Welcome to our Love Simon episode or as I like to call it, after listening back to it, our Veronica Mars - Alvin and the Chipmunks episode. 🤷🏻♀️ Directed by Greg Berlanti, this adaptation of Becky Albertalli's 'Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda' breathes new life into the coming of age romantic comedy. We can't stress enough how much we need more films with diverse stories and characters. ❣️more ❣️more ❣️more Thank you to everyone who has participated in Flying Machine's July Flyer Drive by either donating, discussing or just listening! If you're like, "what is Flyer Drive?", you can learn more at http://flyingmachine.network/support. - And, if we meet our next tier goal, Helen will be writing a scripted rom-com miniseries. This is a super fun goal. We'll also be releasing an extra free newsletter you can read in the Facebook group for a sample of what you get at the $1 level.

Happy 30th Anniversary, Steel Magnolias. We did it! We crossed another "weepy" off the list. Whew! There was no shortage of tear emojis in our notes just as there are no shortage of bad puns in this episode. We even find time to praise and/or objectify the late, great Sam Shepard. Women really can have it all!
